Camp directors
Jim Kirkley
Jim has been the head coach at Riverside High School in Durham, N.C., since 1993 and has taken the new program to the point of being a perpetual championship contender.
He has been named the North Carolina Coach of the Year three times and the conference coach of the year four times. He is also the commissioner of the North Carolina High School Lacrosse Association.
Since 1998, his teams have won four state championships and have produced eight high school All-Americans, five representatives to the National High School All Star game, and 33 first-team all-state players.
His players have gone on to play at a variety of colleges including UNC, Maryland, Navy, Army, Loyola, Lehigh, MIT, Virginia Wesleyan, Guilford, Greensboro, St. Andrews, etc.
A native of Maryland, he was an All Conference defenseman at Bucknell and continues to play today in summer tournaments. He has also coached in Maryland, Massachusetts, and upstate New York.
A graduate of Gordon-Conwell Seminary, Jim worked full time with Young Life for several years where he was heavily involved with their camping program. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Christian Theology and Ethics at Duke and is presently an Associate Professor of Religion and Ethics at Shaw University.
Dick Bitzer
Dick has been the head coach of Annapolis (MD) Area Christian School since 1993, the initial year of the program. He took the AACS team to the championship of the MIAA "C" Conference within five years and then moved them up to the championship game of the "B" conference in which they are now a continual contender.
Dick's coaching career began at Severna Park (MD) High School in 1971 and he has also coached on the college level. He was the head coach in the Maryland State Coaches Association Senior All Star Game in 1998 and has sent numerous players on to play in college at all levels, where many of them have distinguished themselves with All Conference and All American honors.
In addition to lacrosse, Dick has also been very successful coaching both wrestling and football. Dick played collegiately at the University of Baltimore and continues to play year round in Master's and Grandmaster's leagues.
Dick and his wife Lynda are veteran Young Life leaders, having worked with Young Life for over 10 years and led one of the biggest clubs in the history of the ministry. They were both heavily involved with the Young Life camping ministry.
After graduating from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Dick served in church pastorates in Maryland and Virginia for several years before returning to work with high school students.
He presently teaches Religion and Bible at Annapolis Area Christian School where he has been since 1989.
